Chapter 101 I Didn't Kill the Child Fiona fought to reach the windowsill, tears streaking down her face: "Let go, Dad. Letgo, I want to be with my baby..." "Stop, Fiona, don't you dare do anything foolish!" Kelvin stepped forward and took Fiona from the administrator's grasp: "Stop crying." "Mr. Davis," Fiona leaned into his embrace, "It's my fault, blme..." Kelvin silently patted her back.

He was grieving, too; he just couldn't show it, keeping his pain locked inside.

Fiona wiped away her tears and locked eyes with Penelope.

Sensing trouble in Fiona's calculating stare, Penelope braced herself.

And predictably, Fiona played the victim card.

"Moving into The King Manor was Mr. Davis's idea - to ensure the baby's wellbeing. I get why you're upset, but..." Fiona's eyes reddened, "Why would you harm me?" "Me? Harm you?" "When I saw you trip and about to fall down the stairs, I instinctively reached out to help you. And what happened? You grabbed my hand and yankeddown with you! Penelope, I was pregnant! That fall, that tumble it costmy child!" She knew it. Fiona was pinning the blon her! Penelope jumped in to explain right away, "I'm the one who missed my step, but it was you who corneredon the stairs! When I was about to fall, I didn't grab you — it was you who reached for my hand. You're pregnant, why wouldn't you keep your distance? And then you make a show of trying to help me!" Fiona, hurt and resentful, shot back, "So now my trying to help you is somehow my fault?" "You didn't helpat all! You practically fell on me!" "Mr. Davis..." Fiona looked up at Kelvin, tears brimming in her eyes, "If we go by what Penelope is saying, it's like I threw myself down on purpose, like I wanted to lose my baby. I can't bear such an accusation!" Penelope was taken aback.

In her haste, her words had been sharp, directly blaming Fiona.

Even if there was struth to it, she shouldn't have been so blunt in front of Kelvin.

Now Kelvin would definitely despise her more! And true to form, Kelvin's chilly gaze settled on her, "What else are you good at besides shifting blame? You cause the death of a child and then pin it on the mother?" "I..." Penelope clenched her teeth, "If I really wanted to harm Fiona, why would I roll down the steps with her, risking my own safety in such a foolish way? I'm pregnant too!" Wasn't that obvious? Kelvin had to understand that.

Penelope always prioritized protecting her child; she would never take such a risk! But then...

Kelvin said in a heavy tone, "Your child is still safe. Fiona's child is gone." Those words left Fiona and Director Wright wide-eyed and stunned. What?! Penelope didn't miscarry? How could this be? How could Penelope be so lucky? After such a fall, she still kept her baby! It just wasn't fair! "This is fate, something no one can control," Penelope responded, "I was so close...to losing my own child too." Fiona, trembling with anger, pointed at her, struggling to find the words, "You, you... you..." After such so much effort, everything had cfull circle, and Penelope's baby was still unharmed! Director Wright, too, was fuming, mute anger coloring his face, but he had no words. Finally, with a frustrated stomp, Fiona burst into sobs, "How is this fair? Penelope, you've taken my child, and yours is perfectly fine... Where's the justice? Why is my life filled with such suffering?" Planning your weekend reading? Kelvin spoke up, "The child she's carrying is not mine, don't overthink it." "I know, you said you never touched her, and I believe you," Fiona cried, "but, but her child is still here! What do I do?" "Take care of yourself. Tomorrow will be fine." But Fiona was inconsolable, "It's already so tragic now, talking about tomorrow...I might as well bash my head against the wall and end it!" With that, she suddenly pushed past Kelvin and charged headfirst towards the wall.

"Stop right there, Fiona! Don't do anything stupid!" Director Wright shouted at the top of his lungs.

How could Fiona truly intend to take her own life in such a tic fashion? She deliberately slowed her motions, making it easy for Kelvin to catch her and pull her back from the brink.

As she fought against his grip, she exclaimed, "Let go of me, Mr. Davis! I'm so worthless. I can't even protect my own child, let alone avenge... It's all Penelope's fault, and yet she plays the victim..." Kelvin held her firmly, his gaze icy as he turned to Penelope. "Who says you can't have your revenge?" "Mr. Davis..." "Whatever you want to happen to Penelope, will happen. She owes you that much," Kelvin affirmed with conviction.

A sly glimmer of satisfaction flickered in Fiona's eyes. This was the reaction she'd been aiming for! Since she hadn't succeeded in harming Penelope's child, she would bide her tand torment her instead, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike again. "She needs to repent, atone, and apologize for my child's death," Fiona declared with fervor. "She brought this upon herself, and she's going to pay the price!" Director Wright quickly jumped on board with the sentiment, eager to keep the momentum going. "Exactly! Penelope, get down on your knees!" "Kneel? To you?" Penelope gave a derisive laugh. "In your dreams!" But Director Wright rapidly closed the distance and shoved her shoulders. "Do it now! Kneel until Fiona forgives you!"

"You dare defy me?" the Dean retorted. "Haven't you caused enough trouble for our family already? This is what you need to do!" He tried to force her to kneel, but Penelope stood resolutely, her knees rigid and unyielding.

She needed no one's pity. She had done no wrong and harbored no malice in her heart; she would not kneel.

To kneel would be to admit guilt for the death of Fiona's child-something she would never do.

"You're stronger than I thought," the Dean grumbled as he kicked at her knee. "I don't believe you can keep standing like this forever!" Penelope's stubbornness was indeed steadfast. No matter what tactics he tried, she remained on her feet, her gaze fixed on Kelvin.

"You think you can breakdown, makeconfess to something I et didn't do?" She smirked "Le AM make this clear, right here in front of Clear, med all of you. I harbor no ill will, never have. I am not responsible for Fiona's child's death!" Fuming with frustration, Director Wright bellowed, "Shut up and kneel!" Just as he was about to kick her again, Kelvin intervened. "Stop." "Mr. Davis..." Kelvin stepped in front of Penelope, his eyes lowered to her defiant expression. From the moment he'd met her, she'd always been stubborn.

Through everything they'd been through, no matter what happened, she never changed.

Sometimes he wondered if life would have been less harsh for her if she were just a bit more compliant, a bit more obedient.

But that was not her way.

"Do you remember... when I said if anything happened to the child, you Cooper family would pay?"Kelvin raised an eyebrow. "Would the burden fall on the entire Cooper family, or would you shoulder it alone?"
